Dessert On Demand at Creams, Newcastle

Creams Newcastle

Hello, my name is Jennifer and I am a sugar addict. I’m a full-blown sugar monster, I just don’t seem to be able to kick the filthy habit. So when I got invited to try Creams in Newcastle, I just couldn’t turn it down. A restaurant dedicated solely to desserts? Hubba hubba.

Creams Newcastle

Creams is right in town, at the topp of the Bigg Market, where Pizza Hut used to be. Inside, the decor is a bit mental – purple booths, black glitter and disco balls are everywhere you look – a bit like an American diner’s sparklier little sister. Also, big shout out to whoever is in charge of the music in there, it was banging pop tunes all night.

Speaking of all night, Creams is open every day from 11am to 11pm, and is also available via Deliveroo, meaning you can indulge your sweet tooth at practically any time of day. It’s also nice to see a place like this open so late – it’s so relaxed in there, you aren’t rushed in and out like you can be in a restaurant, you can sit and munch and chat away to your heart’s content.

The menu

Don’t come to Creams expecting a “proper” meal. There’s nothing on offer here that isn’t laced with sugar (that’s the whole point)! The menu is divided into: sundaes, waffles, bubble pop waffles, crepes, gelato and sorbet, pudding and drinks. Check out the whole menu here.

As you might imagine, there’s not a lot on offer here for those like me who are dairy free like me, but I found a way around it. My lactose intolerance isn’t severe and I can eat small amounts that are cooked – for example in waffles and crepes – and I can eat sorbet.

So I went for the Refresher bubble pop waffle and my pal Emma went for the Hazlenut Plus One waffle with nutella and peanut M&Ms. We ordered mojito mocktails to drink.

I also had my eye on the Jumble Fudge Crumble waffle (with hot chocolate fudge cake, fudge pieces, milk chocolate and toffee sauce) and Nutty Bannoffle waffle (with banana, nutella and toffee syrup). If I could, I’d love to try the More Oreo bubble pop waffle (with oreo and cookie dough gelato, butterscotch sauce and Oreo cookie crumbs) or the Ultimate Chocolate bubble pop (with maltesers and chocolate chip gelato, melted milk chocolate, white chocolate sauce and chocolate shavings). Just listing all those ingredients out makes me feel a bit sick!

This is the Refresher: a trio of sorbets – lemon, mango and raspberry – mango pieces, mango and raspberry sauce and popping candy. The sorbets were delicious – really fruity and they all tasted different, rather than melting into one. I couldn’t really taste any real mango in there, and the popping candy didn’t really pop either.

The waffle itself was lovely – crunchy on the edges and really light and fluffy. It got a bit soggy with the sorbet on it, but you’d totally expect that. I’m not ashamed to say I ate the WHOLE thing.

Holy guacamole, just look at that – you can almost smell it from the pictures! There was a decent amount of nutella and a massive peanut M&M in each gap. The waffles are served with a little dish of Mr Whippy style ice cream, but you can upgrade to gelato or sorbet if you’d like to. The ice cream was served on the side – ideal for me, because it meant I could try Emma’s!

The waffle was super sickly and a lot stodgier than the bubble waffle, but it tasted great. I mean, you can’t go wrong with those flavours, and you can pick whichever “plus one” you want to go with it, so you don’t have to go for the double nutty chocolate option that we did!

Emma couldn’t get through this one on her own, and by the time I’d eaten mine, I had no room to help her out.

Would I go back?

Creams Newcastle

100% yes! Although because it is so unhealthy, I won’t be making it a regular occurrence. I’d love to take the husband, but I’m not sure whether there are too many nuts flying around for him (he’s allergic). It’s a great alternative to a bar in the evening, and there is coffee available if you want to throw caffeine into the sugar high. Newcastle has been sorely missing good places to go in the evening that aren’t dedicated to booze (WHY do most of the coffee shops close so early?!) so this is a great addition to the city.

There are a whole host of Creams all over the country, find your nearest one here.

Do you fancy a visit to Creams?
