Last week I went to check out the new afternoon tea menu at the Hilton Garden Inn, Sunderland. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it!
The Venue
Hilton Garden Inn is conveniently located slap bang next to the Stadium of Light and is just a short walk from the Stadium of Light metro station. Ideal if you want to grab a bite before seeing a show at the Stadium or need somewhere to stay within stumbling distance!
Our afternoon tea was served in the Karbon Grill, the hotel’s restaurant and bar.
The Food
The afternoon tea on offer at the Hilton Garden Inn is American style, so don’t expect to find dainty cucumber sandwiches here! The cake stands were stacked high with burgers, mini calzones, chicken wings and proper wedges of sugar filled desserts. All served with a thick, creamy strawberry milkshake.
I always love an afternoon tea with a twist and this reminded me of The Baltic Social, a fab place I went to in Liverpool that serves punk rock afternoon tea.
The portions were generous, with plenty to go around us hungry girls. The chicken wings were lovely, but carried a serious kick. My favourite was the mini burgers – soft buns, tasty meat and a hefty portion of cheese.
The desserts – key lime pie, pecan pie and a fudgy chocolate cake were all absolutely delicious. No scones or fairy cakes here! These were truly decadent treats. Not for you if you’re on a diet!
The Atmosphere
I had a great time and it was a lovely chance to speak to some local bloggers and meet some new faces. The restaurant itself is very similar to what you would find in any Hilton – smart, minimalist interiors and soft lighting. I think the hotel’s location and good quality is what will make it a draw for people visiting the area – you know what you’re going to get with a Hilton!
If you’re in the area and fancy treating yourself to something indulgent, then head to the Hilton Garden Inn for afternoon tea with a twist. You won’t be disappointed!
Have you been? What did you think? What’s your favourite kind of afternoon tea?
