Ever since I discovered I was lactose intolerant, pizza was one of the huge things I really missed. I was such a huge fan of Domino’s that they recognised my number when I called and texted me to say they missed me when I stopped ordering. That maybe says more about my diet than anything else, but trust me, pizza is a tough habit to break. So it is with great joy to my inner pizza addict that vegan restaurants are having a bit of a moment. Because that means dairy free cheese and LOTS of it. The latest to spring up in Newcastle is The Bohemian so I dragged Andrew along to try the launch of their pizza menu this weekend.
What Was On Offer?
When we went, it was a special offer – two courses and a glass of Prosecco for £12.99 per person. It was more of a limited offering than there is on their website, but had all the usual pizza suspects on there – Hawaiian, Pepperoni, Seafood. The full menu is pretty extensive and I’d love to go back and try it out soon.
Unfortunately, my lovely other half Andrew is allergic to nuts, so that ruled out most of the starters. Although we could have had the jalapeño bites or the mushrooms, we were told they were fried in the same fryer that is used for nuts. We decided not to risk it.
What did we have to eat?
For our starter, we plumped for the mini mezze for two, which was humous, bread, olives and balsamic vinegar. Now you can’t go too far wrong with this kind of starter but it was still yum. The humous was chunky and tasted homemade and the bread was soft and warm.
On to the main courses.
Andrew plumped for the ‘meatiest’ of the offerings – the ‘meat feast’. It had vegan versions of sausage, bacon and pepperoni. Now for a meat eater like Andrew, it wasn’t particularly meaty, but I imagine it would be a different story for a proper vegan. And even though Andrew IS a meat eater, he still ate up every last morsel!
I decided on the Veganroni – with vegan pepperoni. But I also had my eye on the Tex Mex, with jack fruit and BBQ sauce, which is next on my list.
Our only complaint (if you can call it that) is that both Andrew and I thought there was almost slightly too much cheese on there! I know, I know, how is it possible to have too much cheese? But we both find vegan cheese quite sickly and when you have a whole pizza’s worth it can get a bit too much.
Would We Go Again?
Definitely, as I said, I’d love to try the Tex Mex pizza and loads of other tasty treats on the full menu. If you fancy a visit, The Bohemian is on Pink Lane where the American Diner was.
The decor is also super cool, with loads of vinyl records for sale and album covers plastering the walls. There is a well stocked bar if you fancy a drink and a whole menu of yummy looking cocktails!
If you want to find out more about The Bohemian, then check out their website, Facebook and Twitter.
If you do go, let me know what you think!
